Siemens steps up climate protection efforts by joining the Vattenfall 3C initiative

Siemens is stepping up its climate protection efforts by joining the new global initiative Combating Climate Change (3C), which was announced today in Brussels, Belgium. The Munich-based company is one of more than 15 founding members worldwide. The members of this initiative, which was launched by the European power company Vattenfall, are demanding that climate issues be integrated in the world of markets and trade. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, today met with a delegation of business leaders, including the CEOs Lars G Josefsson of Vattenfall, and Fulvio Conti of Enel, who presented the new global initiative.

Siemens combats global warming with an extensive set of environmental protection measures, management systems, and products and solutions that improve environmental protection and operational efficiency for the businesses of customers. Siemens offers a broad range of energy-efficient products, solutions and services for low-emission fuel and power production, power transmission and distribution, and energy conservation.
To facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy, governments, the private sector and consumers must join forces to create both market pull and technology push. Siemens is committed to finding an optimal balance between greenhouse gas mitigation and sound economic development and puts this commitment into practice by closely cooperating with customers and governments.

Dr. Uriel Sharef, Member of the Corporate Executive Committee Siemens AG, said: "Global warming is a reality – a disturbing reality of staggering and potentially disastrous consequences, and a reality that demands action today.” Siemens welcomes the Vattenfall initiative, which engages business leaders in combating climate change, and joining the initiative is in line with Siemens' objective to develop solutions that protect and improve the environment. Confronting environmental challenges in all its markets and in its own neighborhood is a cornerstone of Siemens' understanding of corporate responsibility. For this purpose, Siemens cooperates with customers and business partners to identify effective solutions that deliver long-term, climate-friendly value.

Siemens' climate-friendly power generation solutions include new highly efficient combined cycle power plants, modernized fossil fuel-based power plants, renewable energy technologies, and emerging technologies like fuel cells and the development of CO2-free fossil fuel-based power plants. On the demand side, the company offers energy-saving industry drive systems with fast return on investment, advanced piezo direct injection for automobiles, energy-saving trains, consulting services for energy-efficient buildings, energy-efficient industry solutions, and much more.

In addition to its support of the 3C Initiative, Siemens promotes global climate protection by participating in major stakeholder rounds like the G8 Climate Change Roundtable, the European Technology Platform for Zero Emission Fossil Fuel Power Plants (EU ZEP), and the European Union’s Motor Challenge Program.

Environmental protection is a key concern at Siemens. This is evident both in relation to the production technology we use and to the range of products we provide. The company has risen to global challenges, such as climate change, energy efficiency and the economical use of resources with numerous innovative products and solutions, focusing on global mega trends such as population growth and urbanization. Siemens was one of the first companies in the electrical and electronics industry to produce its own internal standard for environmentally compatible product design. A company-wide environmental management system has been in place for over 30 years, ensuring that statutory and internal environmental protection requirements are met. This is how Siemens achieves harmony between economic, ethical, ecological and social requirements.
