SYMS: Symantec Fosters Future Technical Leadership with Launch of Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship Program

Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) today announced the Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship Program. The program funds America’s top computer scientists as they research the next generation of real world innovations in security and availability technologies. In addition, fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to work on their projects in close collaboration with top researchers from Symantec’s world class research labs.

“The Symantec Research Labs Graduate Fellowship will foster innovation in areas of computer science critical to our country’s technical leadership,” said Darren Shou, senior manager and head of Symantec’s University Research Group. “This fellowship encourages top graduate students to tackle real world problems in computer security and availability.”

The Graduate Fellowship Program is open to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens enrolled in a U.S. university doctoral or master of science program, pursuing innovative work in fields related to Symantec’s business and research interests. A key goal of the program is to fund research in areas likely to bring real world value to customers.

The one-year fellowship covers 100 percent of the student’s tuition and fees and provides a stipend to cover academic-year living expenses. Recipients will receive ongoing mentorship from top researchers at Symantec Research Labs and are eligible for a salaried summer internship to pursue innovative new research. Multiple fellowships are to be awarded annually by Symantec and each may be renewed for a second year based on the award recipient’s continued exceptional academic standing, research progress, and achievement.

Fellowship applications are now available from Symantec; the deadline for application submission for the 2007-2008 academic year is November 17, 2006. The first Fellowship recipients will be announced in January 2007.

Symantec Research Labs is Symantec’s global research division and has developed and helped commercialize numerous technologies across Symantec’s business areas. Commercialized technologies from the group include the company’s first antispam technology, generic exploit blocking technology that proactively blocks fast-spreading threats, and technology to help protect our nation’s critical power-grid infrastructure.

Symantec Research Labs’ University Research group builds research partnerships with university professors and students working in areas of focus for the company. The University Research group oversees a variety of projects and initiatives today, supporting many of our nation’s top academic institutions. These funding efforts support technology research across a range of key areas for the company, from security and storage to consumer software design.
