Cisco® today announced that Terremark Worldwide, Inc., a leading operator of integrated Internet exchanges and a global provider of managed IT infrastructure solutions for government and private sectors, will deploy the Cisco CRS-1, the core component of the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network architecture, at its "NAP of the Americas" facility, the model for carrier-neutral Internet exchanges and datacenter operations. The network access point (NAP) of the Americas is the first NAP designed specifically to route network traffic among the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. The NAP, located in Miami, connects more than 100 of the world's leading telecommunication carriers, as well as Internet service providers (ISPs), network service providers, government entities, multinational enterprises and other customers.
Terremark's Internet exchanges provide companies a highly secure, redundant and reliable connectivity solution, as well as a compelling alternative to building and managing their own datacenters. In addition to connectivity, the NAP of the Americas provides customers with a service insertion point - a single connection that allows access to an array of advanced networking solutions and managed services. Most of the world's end users have access to these services through the mesh of interconnected carrier networks that are located in the NAP of the Americas and either terminate or have transit traffic through the facility. Terremark also offers business customers 10Gbps Managed Internet Access, wireless LAN, IP voice, IP security (IPSec) VPNs, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) VPN, intrusion detection, content switching and more.
"With the rapid rise of traffic in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the growing amount of traffic between these and other regions in the world, the NAP has experience an increase of traffic moving trough it," said Marvin Wheeler, Chief Operations Officer for Terremark. "We needed a core routing platform that would handle this volume of traffic with ease, and provide the carrier-class scalability, reliability and flexibility that we require. The Cisco CRS-1 meets our needs in every regard."
The core CRS-1 deployment will enable Terremark to move its existing deployment of Cisco 12000 Series routers to the edge of its network to further extend its service portfolio, which includes carrier-neutral connectivity, peering, collocation and hosting for customers around the world. Terremark also offers business customers wireless LAN, IP voice, IP security (IPSec) VPNs, Secure Socket Layer (SSL) VPN, intrusion detection, content switching and more.
The Cisco CRS-1, which has been adopted by more than 60 providers around the world, is the industry's only carrier router designed to offer continuous system operation, unprecedented service flexibility and system longevity. The Cisco CRS-1 is powered by Cisco IOS® XR Software-a unique self-healing, distributed operating system designed for scalability, availability, and service flexibility, while scaling system capacity up to 92 Tbps.
"The availability and reliability of Terremark's NAP of the Americas is obviously critical for both service providers and large business customers around the world, and the deployment of CRS-1 is a testament to the platform's carrier class capabilities," said Pankaj Patel, senior vice president and general manager for service provider routing at Cisco. "Terremark has truly broken new ground with the development of the NAP of the Americas, and we are extremely pleased that it has selected the CRS-1 as the core routing platform for the facility."
